Google reveals most searched-for musicians of 2019, from Billie Eilish to Nadine Coyle

Google has revealed the most-searched for musicians of the year in the UK, with R Kelly, Billie Eilish and Little Mix star Jesy Nelson among the most-googled.

R Kelly has been in the news since January 2019, following the release of the controversial Lifetime documentary Surviving R Kelly about allegations of sexual abuse against him.

In July, he was charged with recruiting underage girls and women to have illegal sex with him, and later received additional charges of soliciting prostitution, trafficking, kidnapping, child pornography and forced labour. He has consistently denied the claims against him.

Other artists have been in the news for more positive reasons, such as Lewis Capaldi and Billie Eilish, both of whom have enjoyed great success in 2019 as new artists. Both are nominated for Grammys at the 2020 ceremony, and both performed at this year’s Glastonbury.

Eilish’s hit song “Bad Guy” went to number one on the Billboard 100 in the US, while Capaldi also enjoyed a three-week run at the top of the charts in the US with his song “Someone You Loved”. He also scored the fastest-selling debut of any British artist this year.

Martin Kemp was a surprise name in the top searches, likely due to the fact that his son, Roman, took part in this year’s I’m a Celebrity competition on ITV.

Jesy Nelson, of the girl group Little Mix, was one of the top searches thanks to her moving BBC documentary Odd One Out, in which she opened up about the abuse she receives from trolls and underwent a journey of self-acceptance.
