A popular bar and restaurant in a Newcastle suburb has been sold after hitting the market earlier this summer.

Earlier this month, ChronicleLive reported that the leasehold for Gosforth bar and restaurant Barluga was on the market for £100,000. And it appears to have been snapped up, with SOLD signs having been put up on the High Street venue.

Barluga opened in the converted United Reformed Church in Gosforth in 2018, replacing the former Loch Fyne restaurant. After taking over, Newcastle-based Vaulkhard Leisure transformed the interior of the church to create a third venue under the Barluga banner alongside sister venues in Newcastle city centre and Morpeth.

It has been a popular venue in the suburb despite promising neither late hours nor live music. However, after making a series of investments Vaulkhard has decided to move on.

The firm owns 14 cafés, bars and restaurants across the region, including Blake's coffee house, Beehive, Redhouse, Bealim House, Central Bean and Offshore 44 - all in Newcastle city centre - The Diamond Inn in Ponteland and the Keel Tavern in Sunderland.

It is not the first time Vaulkhard has cut sites loose - three years ago the firm acquired a number of new sites following a review of the business amid plans for future growth. That strategy saw it offload sites including Swarley’s in the Bigg Market, which is now leased to Sayturk Group, and the Mushroom Bar.

It picked up the former Beeronomy bar and restaurant, which was brought out of administration and transformed into Cuban-inspired bar and restaurant Castro's, while deals were also sealed for the Town Wall and Bridge Tavern. At the beginning of the year, Vaulkhard also announced a merger with the owners of Wylam Brewery.
