HBO is reportedly changing up its Golden Globes submission for the seventh season of Game of Thrones.

According to Gold Derby, Thrones will have two of its stars submitted for nomination in the Lead Actor race at the 2018 Golden Globes, which will be held on January 7, 2018.

These two actors are of course Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow).

And here's why this choice by HBO may be significant.

No actor or actress from Game of Thrones has ever been eligible to compete as a lead role at the ceremony before, with Clarke and Harington getting supporting nods previously (Clarke three times and Harington once).

Thus, the choice to move the pair to the lead category arguably reflects the narrative shift in Game of Thrones as a series, and perhaps suggests a continuation of this in the forthcoming eighth and final season.

The nominations could also mean HBO is planning on submitting others of GoT's ensemble cast in supporting actor categories.

We've seen star turns by a lot of the other actors, including Lena Headey (who arguably should have been nominated for and won all categories for her performance in the sixth season finale), Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, so we'd be behind any of them being put forward.

Game of Thrones hasn't had the best of luck at the Golden Globes previously, so fingers crossed it gets some recognition this time.

Game of Thrones airs on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
