Game of Thrones has shown many a shocking scene over the past seven seasons, though there were two in particular that went way too far for star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

His own character Jaime Lannister has delivered plenty of shocks – you know, that whole thing with his sister – but even those weren't as harrowing for the star as two other big moments.

"I think there was shocking moments, and that's what the show's been good at," he told Variety. "It's such a fine balance where it's, 'Is the shock too big?'

"For me there's two moments that stand out – Shireen being burned at the stake I thought was just cruel. I mean it made sense story-wise and I understand why they did it. But I just couldn't watch it and it was difficult to even read it."

As for the other one, Coster-Waldau explained: "It was very disturbing when [Robin Arryn] was still being breastfed when he was 7. It was so weird and wrong on every level."

However, the star argued they were justified, adding: "The beauty of it, it made sense. Even the most extreme things are driven by story, and I think up to this point in the show, up to the final season you're reaping the rewards of the work that's been put into all these characters.

"So now as an audience member you're kind of invested in every single one of these people. It makes it very interesting storytelling."

The actor confirmed he has already filmed his last scene for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, with just a few extra bits left to finish off.

"I don't think it'll ever be gone from my life. I'm going back to Belfast next week," Coster-Waldau said. "I'm not 100% done, but I've shot the last scene with me."

Meanwhile, Emilia Clarke confirmed earlier this week that she had finished her work as Daenerys Targaryen on the final season.

Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere in 2019. The show airs on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Season 7 is now available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray or digital download.
