Game of Thrones is nearing the end, but nobody still knows how many episodes the very last season will have.

As it stands, the HBO drama's seventh season (coming later this year) is locked at seven episodes. That much is sure.

But season eight is a different beast.

Originally, showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss suggested the show would end after 73 episodes.

"From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70-75 hours, and that's what we'll end up with. Call it 73 for now," they said back in June.

This number of 73 would mean season eight would have six episodes.

But that may not be the case, because HBO's programming president Casey Bloys has said that nothing's set in stone at the moment when it comes to the big finale.

"They're still figuring out the shape of the season, what they want to do," Bloys told Entertainment Weekly. "I'll take as many as they want to do.

"If they give me eight, I'll want 10. But it's really up to them. They'll let me know."

And Bloys added that a prequel TV series remains on the cards.

"It's such a big property we would be foolish not to explore it, but it's a pretty high bar," he added.

"We'll take some shots at it. I'm not going to do it just to do it. It has to feel very special. I would rather have no sequel and leave it as-is than have something we rushed out."

Liam Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos, confirmed recently that the final season will begin shooting in September.

Game of Thrones will return to HBO and Sky Atlantic with its seventh season later in 2017.
