Game of Thrones episodes could be a lot shorter in the future to fit the "mobile environment", at least according to one mobile company boss.

Episodes of the show currently clock in at an average of around 60 minutes, though AT&T's Randall Stephenson has suggested that they could be cut down for mobile consumption.

"I'll cause [HBO CEO Richard] Plepler to panic," said Stephenson at JP Morgan's Global Technology, Media and Telecom Conference (via Variety).

"Think about things like Game of Thrones. In a mobile environment, a 60-minute episode might not be the best experience. Maybe you want a 20-minute episode."

While it would be fit for consumption on a journey, surely some of the thrill of watching an hour-long episode of Thrones would be lost – not to mention the awkward cut-off in some cases.

Though naturally, an event such as the Red Wedding would be its own episode if this talk became a reality.

The comments were speculative, but cutting down episodes of shows such as Thrones could be feasible, as AT&T is closing a deal to acquire Time Warner, which owns HBO and Warner Bros among others.

It could also work with the "faster" pace that has been teased for season seven, with producers DB Weiss, David Benioff and Bryan Cogman revealing that they're not waiting long for the ultimate showdown between dragons and White Walkers.

"For a long time we've been talking about 'the wars to come'," Benioff said. "Well, that war is pretty much here.

"So it's really about trying to find a way to make the storytelling work without feeling like we're rushing it – you still want to give characters their due, and pretty much all the characters that are now left are all important characters.

"Even the ones who might have started out as relatively minor characters have become significant in their own right."

Game of Thrones season seven begins on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK from July 16 and 17, respectively. Watch our recap video to get yourself up to date below:
