Warning: The following article contains major spoilers about this week's Game of Thrones episode 'Beyond the Wall'.

At least one Game of Thrones cast member is practically gleeful that, against the odds, his character survived last weekend's brutal episode 'Beyond the Wall'.

The writing was practically on the wall heading into the battle between Jon Snow's forces and the Night King's army that there was the potential for mass casualties - but surprisingly the biggest toll was taken on Night's Watch randos.

With two notable exceptions. The Brotherhood with Banners' red priest Thoros of Myr (Paul Kaye) bit the big one when a zombie bear took a chunk out of his chest… and the less said about poor Viserion, the better.

The fact that the Brotherhood's leader Beric Dondarrion somehow survived despite fans predicting his brutal demise is a source of pride for actor Richard Dormer.

"I think Beric's still got something he has to do. I think he's still in the game," he hinted to The Hollywood Reporter. "It's weird. Call it a sixth sense, but I didn't think Beric was going to see his end this season.

"I just think that he could do so much more if they keep him alive. I'm really pleased that he's still going, really. I'm really pleased."

Dormer is less chuffed about losing co-star Paul Kaye, whose character Thoros of Myr brought Beric back to life more times than we can count throughout the years.

"Thoros was Beric's last hold on his past," Dormer acknowledged. "Now, Beric is completely alone in this new world that he's been kind of living outside of.

"He's been living in the woods with the Brotherhood, hunting down perpetrators of injustice, no matter what banner they carry. He's been trying to carry out Ned Stark's orders to seek out the Mountain and punish any injustices committed against the poor and the weak in society.

"And after losing Thoros, Beric now knows that the next death will be his last. That will be it. I also really think they became like brothers. They're an unlikely pairing, if you think about it. Thoros was such a drinker and a womaniser, and Beric is such a moral and respectful and humble kind of guy.

"I loved the team. I loved working with Paul. He was such a joy to work with. It was a very sad day when we filmed that."

The episode finishes with Beric promising that he'd encounter The Hound (Rory McCann) again before both of their destinies were fulfilled, so we expect to see the Brotherhood again before all is said and done.

Game of Thrones finishes off its seventh season next Sunday (August 27) with a movie-length finale at 9pm on HBO in the US. It will be simulcast at 2am on Sky Atlantic on Monday (August 28) in the UK.
