Gotham has kicked off its fourth season with Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) finally donning a mask to fight crime.

He'll continue his path towards becoming Batman this season, but as Bruce's dark future looms, the FOX series will also dig up Alfred's dark past.

Early episodes this year see Bruce and Alfred working together on their vigilante crusade, but Sean Pertwee told Digital Spy that the pair will end up divided again before long.

"You do actually start to see the Alfred / Bruce relationship that everyone's expected from the first place," he revealed. "People were horrified in season 1 by my lack of parenting skills, and how brusque Alfred was towards Bruce, but now you'll see the germination of them really coming together and working as a team.

"They start to go on vigilante missions together... but the duo is split by the reemergence of Ra's al Ghul [Alexander Siddig], who is the other father figure [to Bruce] in a bizarre way.

"You will see a terrible rendering, and you will also see who Alfred really is. You'll see Alfred on the streets, who he was and how he was... and it ain't pretty."

The episodes delving into Alfred's past will come towards the middle of Gotham's new season, so you can expect them to air in late 2017 or early 2018.

Gotham continues next Thursday at 8/7c on FOX. The first three seasons are available on Netflix in the UK.
