A new Grainger Market foodie business has a tasty way to attract its first customers when it open its doors this weekend – it’s giving away free food all day.

Crepes Gourmet was first launched two years ago by Marian and Diana Ion, who say they wanted to share their passion for traditional French cuisine with the vibrant community of Newcastle. The pair serve up freshly made sweet and savoury crepes, with fillings including pistachio cream with fresh strawberries, lemon and sugar, biscoff, nutella and banana, and mozzarella, cheddar, caramelised onion and ham.

Their crepes are already a big hit on the festival and market circuit, as well as corporate events, having flipped thousands of crepes for customers at the likes of Seaham Food Festival, the Quayside Market, Heaton Festival ,Sound Wave Festival, Clubland by the Sea event in Hartlepool and Jesmond Food Market.

Now they are poised to open a large double unit in Grainger Market’s Alley 4 this Saturday, November 23, where from 10am to 3pm they have pledged to celebrate the grand opening by serving free sweet crepes all day.

The business owners have been busy painting and kitting out the unit, which also has seating for customers, in preparation for opening day.

The pair told Grainger Market’s social media page: “We started Crepes Gourmet because we’re passionate about food and always loved hosting for our family and friends. We love to make people happy, and our food does that.

“We knew that the Grainger Market is where we wanted to open. It’s a historic icon that attracts so many customers. We spoke to the team at Acropolis Street Food who assured us there was nowhere better to open as a small business.

“The North East has been so welcoming since we moved from Romania in 2020 and since we started our business. The entire North East community has made us feel so welcome and at home. We’re really looking forward to spreading that same feeling of happiness we feel through our food, drink and service.”
