Grammys 2020: Billie Eilish sweeps awards as Kobe Bryant's death overshadows ceremony

Teen sensation Billie Eilish has swept the Grammy Awards, picking up the prizes in all four major categories on Sunday night.

The 18-year-old newcomer won the first of the top gongs, taking home the song of the year statuette for her hit single "Bad Guy."

She followed that up with being named best new artist before winning album of the year and record of the year.

Taking to the stage for album of the year for When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? she said: "I think Ariana deserves this."

"I love you, thank you for this," she added.

Her older brother Finneas, who co-wrote When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and handled its production, said he was puzzled by the album win.

He said: "We wrote an album about depression and suicidal thoughts and climate change."

They were back on stage moments later to pick up record of the year for hit single Bad Guy.

Earlier she also won for her pop album "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" beating Taylor Swift's "Lover," while her older brother Finneas was named non-classical producer of the year.

Tributes to Kobe Bryant

The awards ceremony kicked off in tribute to basketball icon Kobe Bryant, who died hours before the show, with a touching, emotional performance led by host Alicia Keys.

Keys was joined by Boyz II Men on Sunday to sing an a capella version of "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" at the Staples Center - Bryant's stomping ground  -  as the audience watched in awe.

"Here we are together on music's biggest night celebrating the artists that do it best, but to be honest with you we are all feeling crazy sadness right now," Keys said as she entered the stage, adding that "Los Angeles, America and the world-wide world lost a hero."

She said the audience was "heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built."

"Right now Kobe and his daughter Gianna ... are in our spirits, they're in our hearts, they're in prayers, they're in this building," she added. "Take a moment and hold them inside of you and share our strength and our support with their families."

Before the show officially honoured Bryant, Lizzo performed the songs "Truth Hurts" and "Cuz I Love You," saying at the top of the show: "Tonight is for Kobe."

Demi Lovato 'grateful' to be alive

Demi Lovato delivered a powerful performance during the 62nd Grammy Awards, as she made an emotional return to the stage after almost two years away.

The pop star, 27, had paused her career after she suffered a drug overdose in the summer of 2018.

She later said she was "grateful" to be alive.

Lovato took to the stage during the ceremony on Sunday to perform her new song, titled Anyone, which documents her struggles with addiction.

The singer, wearing a flowing white gown, had tears rolling down her cheeks as she sang the track on stage which included the lyrics: "Anyone, please send me anyone/ Lord, is there anyone?/ I need someone."

As the song finished, Lovato received a standing ovation from the star-studded audience inside the Staples Centre.

BTS make Grammy history

BTS made Grammy Award history as they joined Lil Nas X on stage for a performance of his monster hit Old Town Road.

Lil Nas X, a winner on the night, began the segment by strumming a guitar while lying back on a sofa in a set made to look like a living room.

Kobe Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers jersey was laid out on a chair in the background following his death in a helicopter crash hours before Sunday's ceremony.

Lil Nas X was soon joined by country music star Billy Ray Cyrus and a string of other artists who have appeared on various remixes of Old Town Road.

Korean superstars BTS became the first K-pop group to play at the Grammys when they took to the stage, with member RM lending his vocals to a remix titled Seoul Town Road.

Mum's the word for Tyler, The Creator

Tyler, The Creator accepted the award for best rap album with his mother on stage.

He said: "That (is) my mum if you are wondering. Okay, I gotta say my speech dog."

The rapper added: "I don't know if I am going to be up here again, so bear with me. One, to my mother. You did a great job raising this guy.

"Two, to the Clancys, my managers, you guys took a seed and watered it. Thank you for trusting my ideas.

"Three, to my friends and my family for trusting my ideas and putting up with my annoying, hyperactive energy - but for always being there."

He said he had never "felt fully (accepted) in rap" before thanking Pharrell Williams for his wide-ranging influence.

Lizzo gets off to winning start

R&B newcomer Lizzo started the night by winning three of her leading eight nominations, including best urban contemporary album for "Cuz I Love You," and pop solo performance for "Truth Hurts," beating established artists like Beyonce, Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift.

Eilish won her first award of the night for her pop album "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" beating Taylor Swift's "Lover," while her older brother Finneas was named producer of the year.

"This award belong to my sister Billie for her trust and her vision," Finneas said.

Lil Nas X and country singer Billy Ray Cyrus were named best pop duo for their viral collaboration "Old Town Road," which also won the best music video Grammy.

The song, which spent 17 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts last year, is to get a special tribute performance on Sunday from K-Pop stars BTS, making their debut performance at the Grammys, and other musicians.

Slain rapper Nipsey Hussle, 33, who was gunned down in his Los Angeles neighbourhood last year, won best rap performance for "Racks in the Middle," and will also get a separate tribute.

Blake Shelton and his fiancee Gwen Stefani held hands as they debuted their new romantic duet "Nobody But You," while the Jonas Brothers, Tyler the Creator and Boyz II Men were among the other performers.
