A grandmother has been jailed after slashing her husband 13 times with an eight-inch bread knife while he slept.

The man woke to find 53-year-old Debbie Goldsborough standing over him with the knife in her hand.

A court heard that he tried to ring 999 after suffering 13 cuts to his neck, arms and body on September 22, 2018 but she took the phone off him.

York Crown Court heard that when police rang back on the couple’s landline, Goldsborough told them nothing had happened but her husband was heard shouting “help me please, help me” before fleeing the house in his dressing gown.

Goldsborough, from Malton, North Yorkshire, was jailed for 31 months at York Crown Court after admitting wounding.

She had initially claimed her husband had slashed himself but changed her plea on the day of her trial.

The court heard that Goldsborough and her husband, who had been together for four years and married for one, had been on a six-hour pub crawl round Malton that night.

The victim had suggested they go home but Goldsborough said she was staying out, and he had gone home where he fell asleep under the joint effect of alcohol and his medication.

In a statement following the attack, the victim told police: “I cannot live with her, I would be frightened to go to sleep and I don’t want her back in the house.”

He said Goldsborough’s behaviour had changed after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she needed help.

Neal Kutte, defending Goldsborough, said she was a law-abiding woman who had never been in trouble with the police before.
