Grantchester's Robson Green addresses future on ITV drama after co-star quits

Grantchester's beloved Robson Green has spoke about his future with the programme in as the popular show returns to screens for its ninth season - along with some huge shake ups.

The hotly-awaited ITV drama is already promising fans a twist and turn of events as we prepare to bid farewell to Tom Brittney who plays the local Vicar Will Davenport. Fans will have a chance to see him on screens as the new series gets underway but we already know he'd already filmed his final scenes.

According to spoilers, Tom's character Will, is offered a life changing role that he simply cannot turn down and this ultimately ends with him leaving the programme - much to fans dismay.

Furthermore, main character DI Geordie Keating, played by Robson Green since 2014 has now addressed his own future on the popular drama, as he talks "itchy feet".

In a PR interview with the media, speaking about his fate with the broadcast giant, Robson explained: "I never get itchy feet because I'm at a stage in my life where I want to work with people who make me genuinely happy, in front of the lens and behind it."

He went on to outlay that he's in the show for the long-haul and not just for "fame" and "awards". Robson stated: "I'm not chasing awards. I'm not chasing fame. I'm just being present in a very enjoyable and healthy environment, and that's what Grantchester is. It's one of the nicest jobs I have ever done in my career."

The TV star's recent comments land after fans became nervous last year when he expressed concerns about "getting older" and maintaining a healthy work life balance. Although he didn't confirm a timeline for his own exit, Robson definitely indicated that he had been toying with the idea of leaving the programme.

The 60-year-old, confessed in an interview with Radio Times that he wouldn't be part of the show forever. He said: "I'm in the last third of my life and I thought, 'I can’t do primetime drama 24/7 at that pace'."

Robson told the same publication: "I've just finished four months on Grantchester, and it's long days. I love what I do, but I’m looking forward to reconnecting with the outdoors."

He didn't give a timeline but confirmed he would walk out when another member of team also decided to call it a day. The actor promised: "I'll leave when Daisy Coulam [Grantchester writer] leaves. Daisy is the visionary of that show. And the team they've assembled provides me with a safety net."

Meanwhile the highly anticipated ITV drama Grantchester has already gotten underway with welcoming newcomer Rishi Nair, who will play Alphy Kotteram, who appears on the programme with quite an entrance.

Robson revealed previously that his character Georgie didn't warm to the new Vicar Alphy to begin with but revealed that series nine will see their bond flourish.

Grantchester will air on ITV1, from 9pm this evening.
