GRAPPENHALL Heys resident Kym Marsh has returned to the small screen in the revival of BBC school-based drama Waterloo Road.

The 46-year-old former Hear'Say singer was announced as joining the cast of the BBC drama in February 2022,

Waterloo Road's newest series began on Tuesday, January 3, with all episodes available to watch on BBC iPlayer, too.

Kym plays the role of Nicky Walters, a mum of two who also works in the school canteen.

In the first episodes of the series, she is seen as raising concerns faced by many parents in the cost-of-living crisis, such as school uniforms, and being unhappy about how school budgets are being spent.

The new series takes place across seven episodes, and promises to tackle issues such as homelessness, racism, being LGBTQ+, and the cost-of-living crisis.

Kym recently moved to a property in Grappenhall Heys, and featured in the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing, being the tenth celebrity to exit the competition.

When announced as joining the cast of Waterloo Road, she said: "I’m thrilled to be joining the fabulous cast of Waterloo Road, it’s such a joy to get the opportunity to film in Manchester again."

Kym recently spoke to Prima Magazine about facing financial hardship before finding fame, something that resonates with the character she plays in the BBC drama.

She spoke about raising her children, saying: "They were well-clothed and fed, although they didn’t have any luxuries.

"Sometimes it was tricky getting money together for the week."

Kym added: "When Emilie was a baby, my sister and I would sometimes go halves on a bag of nappies.

“I’d also take the kids to my mum’s if we didn’t have enough money to top up the electric meter."

Kym Marsh can be seen in the latest series of the BBC drama Waterloo Road, which airs on Tuesday evenings at 8pm on BBC One, or you can watch all episodes on iPlayer.
