Grasshopper Swarm Catches the Light Over Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas strip received some unusual multi-legged visitors during the week of July 26, as swarms of grasshoppers were sighted.

The massive numbers of pallid-winged grasshoppers were due to a migration from Laughlin, Nevada, and northern Arizona, the Nevada Department of Agriculture said in a press conference, with state entomologist Jeff Knight pointing out that the insects were on their way to central Nevada, were harmless and did not carry diseases.

Knight said that the grasshoppers were “not even one of the species that we consider a problem,” tended to swarm through the city every seven to eight years and would likely leave Las Vegas within a few weeks as they continued their journey north, the Last Vegas Review-Journal and FOX 5 reported.
