There are some foods you just do not mess with, and it became apparent the Cornish pasty was one of them after Tuesday’s episode of The Great British Bake Off.
Fans of the Channel 4 baking competition had some pretty strong reactions to the contestants’ interpretations of the classic baked treat, as they put their own twists on it.
This week’s Signature Challenge saw judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood ask the eight remaining bakers to cook up six Cornish pasties as part of Pastry Week.
It saw them produce a mixture of creations, that strayed pretty far from the traditional recipe of beef, potato, swede and onion, wrapped in a neatly D-shaped shortcrust pastry complete with crimps to make a crust.
Among the goods the bakers produced claiming to be pasties included a fish-shaped and fish-flavoured version, one with a toad-in-the-hole theme, and one that was shaped like a samosa.
Pasty purists were not happy at the deviation, with plenty of conversation about it on Twitter...
Elsewhere in Pastry Week, the bakers were tasked with making eclairs for the Technical Challenge, finishing things off with a caged tart in the Showstopper.
Laura was named Star Baker after impressing Paul and Prue in all three rounds, while it was Linda who found herself eliminated after a series of blunders.
She had produced the samosa-shaped pasties, placed last in the Technical, while her cage fell apart as she tried to make a Gypsy Tart.
Next week, the seven remaining bakers will take part in Bake Off’s first ever Japanese Week.
The Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
