'The Great British Bake Off' pastry week's 5 biggest moments: Why is Paul Hollywood so cross?

The Great British Bake Off's quarter-final saw the five remaining bakers take on pastry week, leaving Paul Hollywood feeling distinctly underwhelmed.

Prue puts the pressure on Abdul

If there's one thing guaranteed to make you feel inadequate in the quarter-final, it's Prue Leith pointing out that you're the only remaining contestant not to have won Star Baker.

As Abdul prepared his signature challenge of sweet vol-au-vents, Leith ambushed him with: "I don't want to spook you, but you are the only baker who hasn't had Star Baker. So how about doing it today?"

Host Noel Fielding helped him laugh it off by saying: "What I find always helps with your confidence is someone reminding you that you haven't been Star Baker right at the beginning of the day."

Sandro's leather trousers

Fielding is fond of a bold fashion choice himself, but he couldn't let Sandro's trousers pass without note.

The presenter asked Sandro: "What's with these trousers today?"

He replied: "I thought I'd go with leather because they're easier to clean," as he dusted flour from his legs.

Fielding said: "Show Prue your leather trousers and she'll forget about the height of your vol-au-vents."

Mangetout causes all kids of confusion

A tough technical challenge saw the bakers tasked with making spring rolls - but it wasn't just the actual cooking that posed a problem.

Various bakers seemed unfamiliar with the vegetable mangetout as they chopped the filling for their rolls.

Janusz said: "So now I need to cut cabbage and man get out."

He wasn't the only one, as Sandro asked: "Man jay toot? Mang toot? Is this a man jay toot? This must be man jay toot. I don't really do these kinds of foods."

Where is Janusz's 8th spring roll?

The question on everyone's lips tonight was what had become of Janusz's missing eighth spring roll?

He was adamant he had cooked enough of them, but when it came to judging, as Hollywood asked why there were only seven rolls he whispered to his fellow bakers: "What? I made eight!"

As the results of the task were announced, Hollywood asked him where the eighth role was and Janusz replied: "Deep fried eight, seven ended up on the plate, don't know what happened."

By the end of the challenge, the roll's whereabouts were still unknown.

Paul and Prue are so disappointed

Is there anything worse than disappointing the judges, especially in a later round?

Pastry week was a bit of a soggy bottom all round in the tent as judges, presenters and contestants admitted how underwhelmed they were with their bakes.

Going into the showstopper - a challenge to make a children's story or nursery rhyme scene with pies - Hollywood looked pretty cross.

He said: "This is pastry week and to be honest, I'm not happy with what they've created so far. They should be doing better. We've got five fantastic bakers, there is no room for error."

Still, none of them managed to wow the tent, with even Fielding saying afterwards: "I feel a little bit traumatised because it's the quarter final, you want it to be amazing, and it wasn't quite..."

Leith agreed: "It was really disappointing. Three out of five of them the pastry wasn't very good, and all their pies were too dry inside."
