Great British Bake Off's week one Star Baker is an 'illusion cake' expert

It was revealed this week that ‘The Great British Bake Off’ hired script writers because Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig “were not funny enough”.

And it seems they’ve selected a pro amongst their trainee bakers to amp up the competition.

Fans of the show may be surprised to see that Steven Carter-Bailey – who won the prestigous title of Star Baker this week – has had an awful lot of practice at making “illusion” cakes.

Steven won Star Baker this week and he got the first handshake from Paul Hollywood.

But his social media reveals he has been making stunning cakes for some time and has created incredible themed deserts of all shapes and sizes, including a Chanel handbag, a flower pot bursting with beautiful daisies, a Captain America and Marvel delight and a Plants Vs Zombies cake.

And according to his account, he’s made wedding cakes.

Announcing that he had won Star Baker, Sandi said: “Bakers, it is my tremendous privilege to announce the very first star baker.

“The star baker is the person whose show stopper was honestly the best thing since sliced bread. The star baker is Steven.”

Meanwhile, sources close to Love Productions confirmed Dawson Bros – made up of
brothers Steve and Andrew Dawson and their friend Tim Inman – wrote comedy lines for Sandi and Noel.

An insider added to The Sun newspaper: “It’s common industry practice to use writers and lots of TV shows do it.

“‘Bake Off’ brought some experienced people on board ahead of the relaunch to try out new ideas.

“But we wanted to use original material by Sandi and Noel as much as possible.”
