Donald Trump declared yesterday to be “a great day” in his first tweet since his communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, was fired at the end of a week of infighting and chaos at the White House.

The financier, known as The Mooch, lasted just 10 days in the role after a series of antagonistic media appearances, including an expletive-ridden tirade at a New Yorker reporter, as chaos further engulfed Trump’s administration.

The president, whose links to Vladimir Putin continue to be probed after his son, Donald Trump, Jr admitted meeting a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin, began the week with a widely criticised, highly political speech at the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree.

Trump then sacked his top aide, Reince Priebus, installing a retired Marine general, John F Kelly, in attempt to steady the ship, as he once again saw his efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, fail.

He was also widely criticised for a speech to police in which he told them not to be “too nice” while transporting suspects, in comments that were criticised for tacitly endorsing police brutality.

News of Scaramucci’s outing came less than six hours after the appointment of Kelly as chief of staff, reportedly at the former general’s request.

Scaramucci joins a growing number of staff who have left Trump’s top team, including Reince Preibus, chief of staff (fired July 28), Sean Spicer, press secretary (resigned July 21); and Micheal Flynn, national security adviser (resigned February 13).

Spicer is believed to have resigned in opposition to Scaramucci’s appointment. Principal deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has taken over as press secretary.

There has been pressure Steve Bannon, the longtime Trump supporter and former Breibart chief executive, attacked by Scaramucci in the New Yorker, who may now remain as White House chief strategist.

The appointment of Kelly is seen as an attempt to reset his premiership after a chaotic six months, in which he has fail to implement most of his campaign pledges.

“Trump has spent a lot of his political capital on nothing but defending his own reputation,” Alex Conant, a Republican strategist, told Associated Press. “There is no sustained strategy. His attention seems to shift with whatever is leading cable news at that moment.”
