Great North Run 2024 weather forecast after heavy rain chaos of last year
There are now just days to go until this year's Great North Run and everyone taking part will be hoping that there's no repeat of last year, when a deluge of rain caused a traffic nightmare at the end of the race.
The start of last year's race was bathed in warm sunshine, with BBC viewers at home concerned that Newcastle manager Eddie Howe would 'overheat' as he fired the gun dressed in a thick black polo neck jumper and blazer. The warm and dry conditions continued for hours as elite and fun runners made their way along the 13.1 mile route from Newcastle to South Shields.,
However, the heavens opened as the majority of participants started to make their way home with roads flooded and the Tyne and Wear Metro suspended, leaving queues of tired and weary people unsure on how they'd actually get home - the last thing they needed after running a half marathon.

The 2024 Great North Run will take place this Sunday, September 8 with the start time now confirmed, as well as the list of celebrities taking part this year. And now our thoughts have turned to the weather outlook. At the time of writing on Monday afternoon, this was the forecast:

The overall picture for Sunday is sunny spells with a gentle breeze, with highs of 17 degrees and lows of 10.
And the best news is that, as things stand, there is only a 29% chance of rain in the morning, which goes down to ZERO by the afternoon.
The highest temperatures are set to arrive from 1pm onwards, with it set to be 15/16 degrees for the start before 11am.
