Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron hit the high notes in the lavish first trailer for The Greatest Showman.

After giving us our first look last month, Fox has unveiled the trailer for the musical that could well do a La La Land and dominate awards season after its release this Christmas.

Sadly, we don't get a look at either Jackman or Efron singing in the trailer, but we do get a lot of glimpses at the choreographed dance scenes, featuring the two of them.

The Greatest Showman is based on the life of the Ringling Bros boss and eccentric showman PT Barnum, considered to be the godfather of the modern circus, with Jackman in the leading role.

It marks his first musical since 2012's Les Misérables and also Efron's musical comeback after the High School Musical trilogy, as he plays Barnum's business partner who falls in love with a trapeze artist played by Zendaya.

And if the on-screen talent doesn't get you excited, the movie's songs come from La La Land's Oscar-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who, even though the movie is set in the mid-1800s, have given it a very modern edge.

"What would Barnum do now? I have an almost-12-year-old daughter. I wanted [the movie] to be as exciting for her as listening to Katy Perry's new song," explained Jackman.

Filming on the musical wasn't without its problems though, as Efron revealed in March that Jackman basically saved him when pyrotechnics got out of hand.

The Greatest Showman also stars Michelle Williams as Barnum's wife Charity and is released on Christmas Day in the US and on January 1, 2018 in the UK.
