Greece issues severe weather warning for tourists as storms set to hit holiday hotspots

Greece's popular tourist destinations are on high alert for severe weather conditions

Greece's popular tourist destinations are on high alert for severe weather conditions anticipated to hit in the next few days. Western Greece, including the Ionian islands and the western Peloponnese, is set to face storms starting Monday night (September 9).

Holiday hotspots such as Corfu and Kefalonia are among those forecasted to be affected by the turbulent weather, which is expected to persist until Wednesday afternoon (September 11). The predicted intense rain, thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds heighten the potential for flooding.

The adverse weather is approaching from the west, with the initial impact on the eastern Greek islands on Monday, before spreading north and westward. Tourists hoping for a dose of late summer sunshine will likely be disheartened by the latest weather predictions.

Those travelling to Greece may need to reconsider their plans, particularly outdoor activities, though the weather should start to clear up by Wednesday morning. EMY, the national meteorological service of Greece, has released an advisory to keep both locals and visitors updated, as reported by the Express.

Citizen Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias has called for increased vigilance in anticipation of the incoming weather. "Based on the extensive briefing of the Risk Assessment Committee and according to the EMY bulletin, from tonight evening and for the next few days dangerous weather phenomena will occur in many areas of the country," he cautioned, reports Birmingham Live.

He explained that the shift in weather patterns isn't just a case of 'summer instability' but is indicative of an 'autumnal system'. "Practically, this means that the bad weather will last longer, so local flooding is not ruled out," he further noted.

Passengers are advised to verify their flight schedules as potential delays could arise. Greek officials have urged residents in impacted regions to 'stay informed about the latest weather developments and take necessary precautions'.
