The Green Party candidate for the Cramlington Eastfield by-election has put bus services and untidy streets at the top of his agenda.

Voters will go to the polls on August 22 to elect a new councillor for the ward following the resignation of Coun Christine Dunbar in June. The Green Party have put forward long-time member Paul Evans as their candidate.

Mr Evans is a resident of the Eastfield ward and a retired administrator. Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, he outlined his priorities for the ward if elected.

Mr Evans said: "I am proud to live in the Eastfield area, it is a great place to live. Sadly it has become rather untidy in places over the last few years with weeds and moss having been left to grow unchecked.

"I would work to have this addressed using environmentally friendly methods.

"I would also act to reverse the deterioration in local bus services as public transport is essential to modern life and is a more environmentally and sustainable method of travel. I'd like to improve the quality of our buses, make routes work for the users and make it a more attractive method of transportation.

"My background is in administration in the shipbuilding and engineering industries. I retired some years ago, and have lived in the Cramlington Eastfield Ward for a long time. I’ve been a member of the Green Party since 1977.

"Over the last decade, people have become more aware of the environment’s place at the centre of our thinking, and the need to consider the future wellbeing of our community in all that we do."

The full list of candidates for the ward are Libby Cripps (Ind); Paul Evans (Grn); Dawn Furness (Ind); James Gillooly (Lab); Andy McGregor (L-Dem); Mark David Owen (Ref) and Alan Smith (Con).
