A hotel with commanding views over the beach and a rich history going back 150 years has been sold to a local business. Known as the 'Grande Dame of Falmouth', the Falmouth Hotel first opened in 1865 as Isambard Kingdom Brunel expanded the Great Western Railway into the county.

For decades it has been an oasis for those seeking the finest level of luxury from their time away, including Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon as well as royalty, military supremoes, film stars, sporting icons and a Prime Minister or two.

It is also where one of the first known picture letters by Peter Rabbit author Beatrix Potter was written. Not only that but the Falmouth Hotel has hosted a plethora of famous people from politicians to musicians.

The landmark hotel with views over Castle Beach was put on the market in March with a price tag of £7.5m. It has now been acquired by the Cornwall Hotel Collection, the owners of The Greenbank in Falmouth and of The Alverton in Truro. The hotel group said it was nice to see the Falmouth Hotel come under local ownership once again for the first time in 20 years.

Roger French, chairman of the board of directors, said: "We are honoured to welcome The Falmouth Hotel into The Cornwall Hotel Collection family. Our roots in Cornwall go back generations, and we understand the responsibility that comes with stewarding such iconic establishments.

"The Falmouth Hotel holds a special place in the hearts of many, and we are committed to ensuring its legacy endures for generations to come."

The company said the Falmouth Hotel will now see a chance of management and undergo a revamp and investment. Ben Young, managing director of the Cornwall Hotel Collection, will head up the transformation of The Falmouth Hotel.

He said the aim will be to turn it into a premium destination for visitors and locals to enjoy. He said: "Falmouth deserves its eponymous hotel to shine brightly as a beacon of pride for the town.

"This is more than just a business deal for us. The Cornwall Hotel Collection has many personal ties and anecdotal links to The Falmouth Hotel. My family were on the board of directors for the original company, right up until the hotel was acquired by the Richardson Group in 2005, and the foundation stone was laid in 1865 by the brother of the first owner of our hotel in Truro."

Ben added: "We believe that The Falmouth Hotel should properly reflect the town’s vibrant spirit and rich heritage. Through careful restoration and strategic enhancements, we will create a hotel destination that celebrates Falmouth's unique identity while offering outstanding hospitality. We are focused on preserving and improving the hotel for the benefit of the town, the employees, and all stakeholders involved."
