Greggs has rolled out another price rise on its iconic sausage roll, leaving customers with a bitter taste. The beloved bakery chain has cranked up the cost of its most sought-after snack by 5p, now setting you back £1.30.

This latest hike is the second in just six months, following a previous increase from £1.20 to £1.25 last year. The new price was first spotted at the Shields Road branch in Newcastle, but it's worth a mention that prices can vary, with some Greggs outlets charging as much as £1.40 for the pastry treat.

Linda Johnson, 74, a retired quality control inspector, expressed her dismay: "It's now £3.90 for four sausage rolls. I wouldn't pay that - I would tell them to stick it. A sausage roll used to be £1, now it's £1.30. I know everyone is watching their pennies but the whole point of Greggs is that it's cheap and cheerful."

She also noted the impact on her routine purchases: "I usually hand over the correct change but when I went to pay I was told that the prices had gone up. I bought a coffee which is up from £1.60 to £1.70. It's still cheaper than supermarket coffee or other big brands so I will still go there."

Heather Hife, 62, a carer, chimed in with criticism: "It's disgraceful that they have raised their prices. They are a big company and are making a lot of profit. They shouldn't be putting them up. The prices already went up before. I will stop buying sausage rolls when they reach £1.50."

Meanwhile, a Greggs employee acknowledged the situation: "It went up just after Christmas. There have been a few complaints from regular customers who have noticed the increase."

In 2016, you could snag a Greggs sausage roll for a mere 85p, but prices have puffed up seven times since then the latest hike occurred in July when the cost of both the meat and vegan renditions rose by 5p." The Mirror is on the case and has reached out to Greggs for their take.

Brits have been complaining about the price of sausage rolls

The timing is quite relevant, as today Greggs sent out a heads-up that it will need to knead its prices higher due to the planned uptick in employer National Insurance contributions and the minimum wage kicking in this April. The bakery behemoth forewarns that "employment costs will result in further overall cost inflation, although wage increases should provide support to consumers".

Greggs not only broke the £2billion barrier in annual sales last year for the first time, but also noted its sales were slightly cooler than the 5% growth toasted in the prior quarter. Chief Executive Roisin Currie piped up about recent sales, saying that diminishing consumer confidence "continues to impact high-street footfall and expenditure".

However, she layered on a positive note: "Our value-for-money offer and the quality of our freshly prepared food and drink position us well to meet the headwinds we expect to see in the year ahead, and we remain confident in the significant long-term opportunity for growth."
