Gray Clouds and Green Aurora Australis Combine in Tasmania Timelapse

Tasmania offers skywatchers a year-round chance to see the aurora australis, or southern lights, and photographer Tim Grimsey has regularly taken the opportunity to create some stunning visuals.

August 5 was no different, as Grimsey took himself to his “favourite tree” in the Tinderbox Nature Reserve. It was a somewhat cloudy night, but if anything, that added to the effect of Grimsey’s timelapse, as the green of the aurora played against the clouds scudding across the sky.

“I was treated to some stunning green aurora australis … from behind the cloud,” Grimsey wrote on Facebook.

Grimsey said he used two cameras to record the footage, a Nikon D750 and a D5500. Credit: Tim Grimsey via Storyful
