Coronation Street is set for a bit of Hollywood glamour, as Grey’s Anatomy actor Luca Malacrino joins the cast.

The 26-year-old Cardiff born actor will join the soap on a temporary basis as Andrea – David Platt’s first employee at his new barber’s shop.

David and big brother Nick Tilsley have gone into business together, and are set for a shock when they expect Andrea to be an attractive woman.

Discovering Andrea is actually an Italian man when he turns up to the interview, Shona Ramsey and Leanne Battersby will persuade the brothers to give him a chance.

Corrie bosses have remained tight-lipped on further details of his storyline, but have described Andrea as ‘fiery, Italian, stylish.’

Malacrino, who’s appeared in US show I’m Dying Up Here, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Grey’s Anatomy says it was his mum who persuaded him to return to the UK for a chance to star on the cobbles.

“I rang my mum in Cardiff and asked her if she thought taking the next flight out to audition for Coronation Street was a good idea.

“She said, ‘I don’t know why, but I have a really good feeling about this one’. So I booked the next flight out,” Malacrino told Wales Online.

“In Hollywood I’ve played a psychopathic murderer, a ’60s British agent and an ex-con from Brooklyn so it’ll be great to get stuck into a completely different role on Coronation Street.

“Around eight million people watch it per week, which is a pretty brilliant feeling. I can’t wait to show what I can do with this character,” he explained.

Malacrino is set to make his Coronation Street debut on Wednesday February 6th.
