Grey's Anatomy announces new Chief of Surgery as season 19 continues
Grey's Anatomy season 19 spoilers follow.
Grey's Anatomy has given its hospital a bit of a shake-up as season 19 revealed who the new Chief of Surgery is.
After Owen, Bailey, and Meredith all held the position, it is now Kim Raver's Teddy who takes on the prestigious title.
In the season's eighth episode, Teddy puts her name forward for the open role but soon questions why she's done that as the job is something a poisoned chalice.

However, Bailey advises Teddy to make the most out of Grey Sloan's desperation and approach Richard (James Pickens Jr) with a list of demands for the role should she get it. Teddy asks for an assistant, double her wage, a research stipend, and further vacation.
Richard, however, is wise to Teddy's moves and denies her this, saying he'll take up the position himself. Teddy negotiates and dials back some of her demands before Caterina Scorsone's Amelia tells Richard she wants the job, too.
However, she makes even more demands of Richard, and Richard is forced to choose Teddy as the new Chief of Surgery as she turned out to be the cheaper option after all.

Teddy secures the job as an annoyed Richard leaves, while it is then revealed that Amelia only applied for the job because Bailey told her to in order to shake things up a little bit and force Richard's hand. Success all around.
This is the continuation of one of the longest-running shows of all time, which recently aired the landmark episode in which Ellen Pompeo left the show. Pompeo opened up about what it's been like without Grey's ever since she left.
"It feels so fun. Because now I get to travel more. You know what I mean," the star said.
"So it's really well-earned. I've had so many years where the show takes up so much of your time, so this is the first time I’ve been traveling so much since I’ve been not working."
Grey's Anatomy season 19 airs on Thursdays on ABC in the US. The show streams on Disney+ in the UK, where new episodes premiere on Wednesdays.
