Grey's Anatomy looks to be setting up a major storyline for Dr Richard Webber.

For the upcoming 16th season, the show is bringing back Jasmine Guy as Gemma in a "key recurring role", reports Deadline.

Gemma appeared in 'Head Over Heels' (season 15 episode 22) as a patient who also knows Richard. She had to have surgery after one of her high-heeled shoes was impaled in her chest.

The episode revealed that Gemma and Richard had the same Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor, Ollie. When Ollie died, Gemma relapsed after 17 years of sobriety.

The surgery was successful. Gemma survived, and she and Richard bonded as she recovered.

Last month, showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed that there will be an episode in season 16 that will be focused on Richard – and it seems likely that Gemma will be involved in some way.

At the end of season 15, Richard was fired alongside Dr Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) after they admitted to knowing about Dr Meredith Grey's insurance fraud.

We already know that there will be a time jump during the first episode of the new season.

Grey's Anatomy will return to ABC in the US on Thursday, September 26. It airs on Sky Witness and NOW TV in the UK.
