Grey Sloan Memorial has more than its fair share of death and destruction, but fans still weren't expecting last night's (January 17) devastating Grey's Anatomy twist.

Yep, Shondaland has done it again.

Picking up where last year's cliffhanger finale left off, yesterday's winter premiere saw doctors battle to perform Cece Colvin's life-saving organ transplant in time.

Despite overcoming the hospital's ubiquitous obstacles – and successfully managing to give Cece the matchmaker a new heart – it didn't take long for things to turn... morbid.

Yes, even with Meredith Grey's best efforts, Cece sadly passed away after crashing on the operating table. So, as it turns out, the woman who helped heal Meredith's broken heart couldn't save her own.

In typical gut-wrenching Grey's fashion, fans watched on as Meredith promised a peaceful (and decidedly dead) Cece that she will continue dating in her honour.

Somebody sedate us, etc etc.

Fortunately for us, there is some respite for Meredith on the horizon, as one (of two) of her love interests recently promised that things will hot up between the pair.

Teasing Meredith's love triangle with Andrew DeLuca and Atticus 'Link' Lincoln, Giacomo Gianniotti said: "It's like a push and pull. It will be interesting to watch."

Grey's Anatomy continues Thursdays on ABC in the US. It airs on Sky Living and NOW TV in the UK.
