Grey's Anatomy future revealed after season 19ABC

Grey's Anatomy isn't coming to an end just yet.

Following the departure of showrunner Krista Vernoff, and lead character Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) departing the hospital, there was speculation that the long-running show had run out of steam.

That isn't the case however, as Grey's Anatomy has been renewed for season 20. The Wrap also reports that Meg Marinis will step up to become the new showrunner.

Marinis has been an executive producer since season 15, but has actually been involved since season 3, starting out as an assistant and penning over 25 episodes over the years, including the nostalgia-filled 350th episode and the most recent one.

At the time of writing, it's not been announced if Station 19 has also been renewed with Marinis at the helm, or whether it will end with season 6. It's also unknown if Pompeo will continue as narrator on Grey's, but it'd be weird for Grey's Anatomy to not feature Meredith Grey in any capacity.

However, it was recently confirmed that the actress will return in person for the current season's final episode, which will be airing in May in a two-hour event.

Someone who won't be back is Kelly McCreary, who is departing the role of Dr Maggie Pearce.

"After nine seasons, I am saying goodbye to Maggie Pierce and her Grey Sloan family. It has been a tremendous honour to be a part of such a legendary television institution as Grey's Anatomy," she said.

"Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the true joys of my life and I leave with profound gratitude for every step of this journey. I am excited for this next chapter, and what the future holds."

Grey's Anatomy season 19 airs on Thursdays on ABC in the US. The show streams on Disney+ in the UK, where new episodes premiere on Wednesdays.
