Group fears as volunteers desperately needed to help keep Rossendale looking clean and cheerful

A group that helps to keep the borough looking clean and cheerful is looking for new volunteers.

Civic Pride Rossendale would like to see new people join the group to get ready for the judging of North West Britain in Bloom competition at the end of July and the beginning of August. It can just be a short term involvement to help this spring and early summer to help Rawtenstall look great for the competition.

Current volunteers say they are ‘very concerned’ about the numbers for their two community group gardening sessions on Thursday and Sunday mornings 10am-noon. These groups tackle big gardens and require a lot of people.

The work involves lots of weeding and planting and other jobs, but the group is asking people to only work to their own abilities and help and advice is always available. The larger flower beds in Rawtenstall are: the embankment opposite Asda, the gyratory with the little train, the Riverside gardens by Tesco, the inbound and outbound lay-bys, and the Haslingden Road gardens.

Volunteering provides an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of flowers, how to improve the soil and what plants grow best in Rossendale. There is also a chance to learn about how the group tries to work in an environmentally friendly way to encourage wildlife and biodiversity and also to make new friends.

No knowledge of plants or tools are required and there is no rota or fixed commitment. There are many other volunteering opportunities available such as volunteering at Whitaker Park on Tuesday afternoons 2-4pm and Trickett’s Memorial Ground at Waterfoot on Monday mornings.

Volunteers can also help in the greenhouse. Joiners and engineers are welcome to help and make and repair items, and anyone with IT skills can help with the website and social media.
