Group Performs Traditional Ceremony in Portland to Honor Missing or Murdered Indigenous People

More than 150 people gathered in downtown Portland on May 5, for a ceremony to honor missing and murdered indigenous people on a day of awareness, The Oregonian reported.

This footage, by Independent Media PDX, shows a group performing as part of the ceremony. According to The Oregonian, the gathering was organized by young people from tribes across Oregon and Washington.

In a statement issued on May 4, President Joe Biden officially declared May 5 “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day,” citing “thousands of unsolved cases of missing and murdered Native Americans.”

“I call on all Americans and ask all levels of government to support Tribal governments and Tribal communities’ efforts to increase awareness of the issue of missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives through appropriate programs and activities,” Biden said in a statement.
