Guardians of the Galaxy 2 cast release mixtape inspired by Marvel sequel

Despite the Iron Man films featuring numerous AC/DC tracks, no other Marvel blockbusters used popular music quite so liberally. Until Guardians of the Galaxy, that is.

The soundtrack soon became a massive chart hit, reaching number one in the US and two in the UK, featuring numerous hits from the 70s and 80s including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough”, “Moonage Daydream”, and "I Want You Back”.

Excitement for Vol. 2 is, of course, extraordinary. Songs that have either appeared in trailers/been discussed by James Gunn include Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain", Jay and the Americans' "Come a Little Bit Closer” and Sweet's "Fox on the Run”.

The film’s cast has now released their very own mixtape inspired by the upcoming sequel, actress Chris Pratt telling Empire of his decision to include “Whiskey and You”: “When I’m on the road, I tend to listen to songs that allow me to bask fully in my loneliness. When I want to dive headfirst into sorrow, I listen to this.”

Gunn chose “She’s Gone” by Hall & Oates calling it “one of the greatest pop songs ever written,” adding that the song failed to make the film’s final cut. Listen to the entire playlist via Spotify below.

The director recently confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently in development, but chances are Gunn won’t be involved.

He recently said in an interview: “We’re trying to figure it out. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do really, that's all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing.

“You know, I'm going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I'm just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”

During the same interview, Gunn answered questions about the Guardians place in the upcoming Avengers, saying: “I don't think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they're a part of Thanos' stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 reaches UK cinemas 28 April.
