Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt has revealed he's "so thrilled" that James Gunn is back at the helm of Vol 3 after Disney reinstated him as director of the film earlier this year.

Speaking at the world premiere of Avengers: Endgame, Pratt shared that he thinks having Gunn back on board as director is the "right move" for the series, adding that he feels good about what's to come in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

"I was so thrilled, so excited. I think it's the right move, I really stand behind it," Pratt told People.

"I'm really proud of Disney for hiring James back and ultimately thrilled for not only us, but also for the fans. I think it's going to wrap up the trilogy in the best way.

"And Guardians of the Galaxy are really all about second chances and giving people an opportunity to be their best. We're a ragtag squad of people coming together and having each other's back," he continued.

"I think it really worked out the way it was supposed to, and I feel good about it."

Disney fired Gunn in July last year after old inappropriate tweets of his resurfaced and were shared around online. Pratt joined the rest of the film series' cast – including Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel – in signing their names to an open letter sharing their support for their director shortly afterwards.

Gunn had apologised for the tweets, but the future of the Guardians films was briefly in doubt after it was reported that the film had been put on hold in the wake of the firing, while Gunn moved on to his next project to direct The Suicide Squad.

Speaking after being reinstated in March, Gunn said that he was "tremendously grateful" for the support he'd received over the last few months.

"I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be," he added. "I deeply appreciate Disney's decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all."

Of course, before we can get to Guardians Vol 3, there's the little matter of Avengers: Endgame to get through.

And, on the off-chance you're worried it wouldn't live up to expectations, don't be! Not only do we think it was amazing (read our spoiler-free review to find out why), but the film has also been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes too.

Avengers: Endgame is in cinemas now in UK and will be released on Friday, April 26 in the US.
