Residents in Guildford have been warned of delays to kerbside bin collections until the start of July due to a major change in the borough. This is due to the temporary closure of the nearby Slyfield Community Recycling Centre (CRC) which will mean bin lorries and locals disposing of their own rubbish will have to travel to centres further away.

Councillors advised constituents that additional measures will be put in place but one claimed “some disruption to collections is inevitable”. Surrey County Council (SCC) confirmed Slyfield CRC will be shut from June 15 and will reopen on July 1.

Guildford councillor for the Castle ward Cllr Maddy Redpath posted that there will be a partial closure at the site from June 10, which will become a full closure on June 15. Guildford Borough Council (GBC) shared the same dates. Cllr Redpath clarified delays to collections can be expected from June 17 until June 28.

SCC warned: “There are also potential delays entering the site up until August 2.” It said: “This is due to traffic management controls, put in place by Thames Water contractors 'BAM'.”

GBC added that essential major works to the Community Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station hope to prolong the lifespan of the site. The council warned: “During this time there may also be some delays to our normal kerbside collection service. This is due to increased journey times to alternative disposal facilities."

Guildford councillor for the Burpham ward and GBC portfolio holder for Environment and Climate Change Cllr George Potter elaborated that the temporary measures are necessary for the essential refurbishment. He advised some disruption is “inevitable” but said people should put their bins out as normal.

Cllr Potter said Guildford's refuse crews will have to drive further to dispose of the rubbish they collect and said: "Unfortunately, we are making changes, and expecting disruption, to bin collections across Guildford borough from June 15 to 30 due to the Slyfield Community Recycling Centre being closed by Surrey County Council for essential major works."

He continued: "To try to minimise disruption, GBC will be running additional waste crews and vehicles. A major change that every resident should be aware of is that we will be collecting food waste separately during this period. Bins should be put out as normal, but different crews will come at different times of the day to collect different bins."

Guildford residents can make use of the Surrey Resident Scheme and take household waste and recycling to other community recycling sites in the county. Proof of address will be needed to use other sites.

This can include a driver's license, this year’s council tax bill, a recent utility bill, a Surrey bus pass, or any official document that displays a name and address. Guildford residents can report a missed collection online here.

Cllr Potter concluded: "I am asking residents to please be kind to our council staff, who will be under more pressure than normal, and to be patient with the council during this period of disruption. Everyone involved will be working as hard as they can to keep services running, and missed collections should still be reported to the council but I would ask people to wait a full day before contacting the council to report a missed collection, as it may be that the collection is going to happen but that the crews have been delayed."
