A car park next to Guildford Hight Street has permanently closed ahead of a large development in the town centre. The spaces off Commercial can no longer be used.

The entrances have been fenced off, with signs saying that the site has been closed since May 27. The car park contained roughly 50 spaces and was very convenient for the high-street as it is just off the Friary Centre.

The Old Police Station car Park, on Leapale Road has also been fenced off, with similar closed signs put up. This location has around 60 spaces and is also very close to North Street.

The closure has caused speculation online on why the area has shut. The answer to which is that the car parks have been earmarked as part of the North Street Development that is scheduled to begin in Autumn. Once complete the area will be home to 477 new homes as well as other amenities.

Construction is set to begin in Autumn, but no specific date has been given. One of the first things to be addressed will be the bus station that sits opposite the Commercial Road car park. Once complete the Commercial Road site will become homes, and Leapale Road is set to become two way.

“Where do you park?” wrote one Facebook user, lamenting the closure. These particular car parks are often home to delivery drivers, but are also used by those popping into the shops. Alternative car parks include the Leapale Road multi-story (which sits opposite the Old Police Station) and Tunsgate.

The new development is not set to finish until 2031, and when finished should contain a new medical centre as well as pedestrianisation of the area.
