Gunman Opens Fire At California University

A suspected gunman has been arrested in northern California after seven people were killed in a shooting at a university.

"Possible suspect in custody. No imminent public safety threat appears to exist in immediate area," a tweet from the Oakland Police Department said.

US correspondent Greg Milam said: "There is no confirmation yet that this is the person responsible and for that reason the investigation continues.

"Although we see at the university itself that the police activity has been scaled back. It appears the SWAT operation to sweep this building and check every corner has been searched appears to be over."

The suspect was apparently arrested in the car park of a nearby clothing store about 80 minutes after the shooting.

In a statement, police confirmed that seven people were killed and three others wounded in the attack.

Witnesses said the armed man stood up in an acupuncture class at the Oikos University and began shooting.

"One of the people who was inside the building, she was saying there is a crazy guy inside," witness Brian Snow told KGO-TV.

"She did say someone got shot in the chest right next to her, before she got taken off in an ambulance."

Footage showed police evacuating students and loading them into a vehicle as other armed officers took up positions around the school.

Earlier, police said the suspect may be an Asian male, possibly armed, wearing tan or khaki clothing.

Oikos, which has programmes in theology, nursing, music and Asian medicine, describes itself on its website as having been started to provide the "highest standard education with Christian value and inspiration".

It predominantly serves Oakland's Korean population.
