Gunshots fired near Donald Trump as ex-president's campaign team issues statement
Donald Trump is "safe" after gunshots were fired near him, according to a statement from his campaign. "President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time," the campaign confirmed.
Nonetheless, the Washington Post among other news sources report that the incident occurred close to Mr Trump's golf course in Palm Beach, Florida. The New York Post reports two people exchanged gunfire outside of the golf course, and were aiming at each other and not the ex-president and he was not in danger.
On 13 July, Mr Trump was wounded during an assassination attempt. Gunman Thomas Crooks, 20, unleashed a barrage of at least eight shots towards the stage as he was giving a speech.
The shooting resulted in the death of one person and injuries to Trump and two others. Trump sustained an ear injury and was seen bleeding as he was hurried off the stage.
The FBI said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Secret Service agents fatally shot Crooks, who attacked from an elevated position outside the rally venue at a farm show in Butler, Pennsylvania, the agency said.
The attack was the most serious attempt to assassinate a US president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. It drew new attention to concerns about political violence in a deeply polarized US less than four months before the presidential election.
