Gustavo Petro Claims Victory in Colombian Presidential Runoff Election
Gustavo Petro claimed victory in the Colombian presidential election on June 19, becoming the country’s first leftist head of state.
Petro, a former guerilla fighter with the 19th of April Movement and mayor of Bogota, defeated businessman Rodolfo Hernandez with 50.4 percent of the vote, El Tiempo reported.
