Shoppers are 'gutted' as an iconic shop prepares to shut for good. Brassingtons was founded in Hanley in 1901, has been in its current Piccadilly location since 1938, and served generations of customers.

But footfall is falling in Hanley and Brassingtons is shutting its city centre shoe shop and retaining its branch in Longton. It comes as Soley Kids shoe shop shut last month after 17 years on Town Road.

Jude Jones can count three generations of her family who have had shoes from Brassingtons.

She said: "Gutting. I had shoes from here as a child, my five children had shoes from here, and now I buy shoes from here for my grandchildren."

Zoe Bailey said: "Brassingtons will always have a place in our hearts. Every one of us taking our children in for their first-ever shoe and still have our polaroid picture to show for it."

Josey Tilstone added: "I always took my girls there for their shoes - great customer service."

Former staff have also expressed their sadness at the impending closure of Hanley Brassingtons. It shuts for good on 30 September.

Sarah Glover said: "I worked there for three years in the 1990s. It is a lovely shop and they were amazing people to work for and with."
