How Gwen Stefani's style has evolved with her relationships

Gwen Stefani has always had an immediately recognizable signature style: glossy red lips (said to be that particular hue thanks to Revlon), a penchant for loud leopard print and bleached blonde highlights.

Of course, Stefani has still gone through plenty of style evolutions, whether she’s singing ska or country alongside her beau, Blake Shelton.

Rockabilly, Harajuku girls, chola culture and cheerleaders have all inspired her fashion choices.

But Stefani also appears to have taken fashion inspiration from her long-term relationships. During her rise to fame, she dated No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal. After the release of Tragic Kingdom, she dated and then married Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, penning many songs about him along the way.

These days, the 50-year-old popstar is happy with her fellow judge on The Voice, country star Blake Shelton. All coincide with Stefani's changing fashion, taking her from bondage pants to camouflage caps.

The Tony Kanal years: 1987 to 1994

"The night Tony broke up with me I put braids in my hair," Stefani told The Telegraph in a 2000 interview, which took place during her notable pink hair and braces phase. But before the braids, Stefani took style references from Kanal's culture. His mother inspired her bindi obsession, which she was spotted wearing on red carpets and in concert (a look she drew criticism for).

During the '90s, she also mixed plaid with pre-Hot Topic bondage pants and wore vintage dresses and loads of leopard print, which remains one of her wardrobe staples.

The Gavin Rossdale years: 1995 to 2015

In a 1997 Rolling Stone interview, Neil Strauss documented Stefani's early days with Rossdale, when she most often wore a fur jacket and bikini top underneath. Rossdale was the first person to buy her Prada and introduce her to higher-end designers.

From there, she began to embrace high fashion, creating her label LAMB and debuting her collection at New York Fashion Week.

During her marriage, she wore pin-up curls and at times swapped out her red lip for a neon pink one. But even when she was playing at the park with her kids, she had her signature lipstick on.

The Blake Shelton years: November 2015 to present

Stefani has said her relationship with Shelton led to a new style evolution. She described her current look as “more feminine than ever before” and confessed, “it’s probably because I’m super in love and have a really manly man," in an InStyle interview.

Calling herself a tomboy, Stefani said she “hardly ever carried a purse" but also described her look pre-Shelton as “rockabilly-meets-’50s pinup girl.”

Now, she's all about embracing full Hollywood glamour - with a little bit of country thrown in for good measure. But Stefani still loves to surprise, whether it's pitching up on the red carpet in 90s camouflage or wearing shoes with her boyfriend's face on them. Wearing your heart on your feet? Now, that's true relationship dedication.
