Gwyneth Paltrow explains what clean beauty means to her

Gwyneth Paltrow has explained what clean beauty means to her.

While speaking to Bustle for an interview, Gwyneth, founder of wellness company Goop, detailed what "clean" means to her and her business.

"I think it means something different to everybody, and I think there's 'clean' by a lot of different standards," the 51-year-old explained. "I really trust our product development department here. We have amazing scientists. We ban thousands of ingredients from both what we make and what we sell on the site from a multi-brand perspective. Because it's not broadly regulated, we've come up with our own internal dos and don'ts."

While discussing how the word "clean" has previously received backlash for being exclusionary, the Shallow Hal star noted that it has become an "umbrella term".

"Well, for us, it means nontoxic," she said. "Though clean has become a sort of umbrella term for a lot of this stuff. I think it's a really nice word. My life is super messy, so the idea that you can strive for cleaning it all up feels refreshing in a way."

Gwyneth recently announced the launch of Goop's new affordable beauty line, good.clean.goop. She explained in the interview how she has created a clean beauty range at a lower price point than her brand's other collections.

"What happens is that you use a lower amount of actives and botanicals and stuff like that," the wellness mogul said. "It's all about 'At what concentration will this still be efficacious but affordable?' In certain cases, you're balancing, like, 'It would be so nice to also have this in there, but it's going to make the cost of goods too high.'"

Gwyneth has previously stated that all of Goop's beauty products are non-toxic, non-irritating, and cruelty-free.
