Gwyneth Paltrow has been blasted by Marvel fans after she appeared to shoe-horn a tribute to legendary comic-book writer Stan Lee in an Instagram advert.

The American actress, who has starred in a number of Marvel firms including the Iron Man franchise and Avengers series, sparked outraged over what appeared to be a lacklustre tribute to the prolific writer.

In a post prior to the news of Lee’s death, Paltrow appeared to share an image of herself hugging Avenger’s co-star Chris Pratt, wearing a spangled midi-dress which was on sale on her Goop shop.

The 46-year-old captioned the snap: “‘For my pal who asked, this @retrofete dress now for sale in the @goopshop. Thanks for the hug @prattprattpratt.”

On learning Lee had died, the post was updated with: “UPDATE: I just heard about Stan Lee, he will be so missed.”

One sarcastic user wrote: “A lovely tribute.”

Another commented: “Did Gwyneth Paltrow just f****** talk about Stan Lee’s death under an advertisement of a DRESS? Just wtf... Oh wait, just checked her IG again...she deleted it.

“Not a single word about Stan tho. The man that she pretty much owes most of her wealth to. And much more. Huh (sic).”

A third added: “Gwyneth Gooping for Stan Lee’s afterthought.”

The post has since been deleted.

Lee’s daughter confirmed he had died in hospital on Monday, at the age of 95.

In a statement she said: “He felt an obligation to his fans to keep creating.

“He loved his life and he loved what he did for a living. His family loved him and his fans loved him. He was irreplaceable.”

She did not mention Lee's cause of death but the TMZ celebrity news website said an ambulance was called to his Hollywood Hills home early on Monday and that he died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre.

Elon Musk, Ryan Reynolds and Edgar Wright were among those who paid their respects to the comic icon.

Avengers and Captain America actor Chris Evans said he was one of a kind as he posted Lee's catchphrase, "Excelsior!" while Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman said he was "a pioneering force in the superhero universe," adding he was "proud to have been a small part of his legacy".

Meanwhile, Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr said he "owed it all" to Lee.
