I had a drink at the 'most remarkable' pub in East Yorkshire

Hull and East Yorkshire have plenty of excellent pubs to enjoy - but one in Beverley has recently stood out from the rest.

In this year's REYTA awards, a 14-year-old competition which highlights the very best attractions, individuals, and hospitality businesses, Beverley pub Rose & Crown was crowned the "Most Remarkable" in East Yorkshire. I decided to pay it a visit and see for myself.

As I approached, the front-facing beer garden was understandably empty due to the freezing temperatures, but I paused for a minute to admire the style. The black-and-white framing is decorated with plenty of plants and a few festive wreaths. This decor style was commended when the pub was awarded, and it's easy to see why.

The pub was bought at the end of 2020 and underwent a pretty intense makeover. In the years since, it's clear that the place has been well looked after, fresh while still maintaining its historical charm.

Walking in, the pub offered some welcome warmth. With some Radiohead playing in the background, I approached the bar and ordered a pint of Guinness. At only a fiver, I couldn't complain at all.

I took my seat and admired the pleasant surroundings. There's an impressive mural of racehorses on the wall and I couldn't help but wonder how much Prosecco this place goes through come Ladies' Day.

Sipping on my Guinness, on a comfortable couch with a wood stove fire in front of me, I thought a winters afternoon doesn't get much better than this.

I clearly wasn't alone - A couple came in to hide from the cold and straight away said, "Have you seen these photos?" to each other before heading to the bigger second room.

The seats facing the windows had integrated copies of old photos into the frames. Some dated back to the '60s, and most, if not all, had little historical tidbits of information. It was a very cool way of celebrating not just this pub but the town as a whole.

The pub is open Tuesday 7-11, Wednesday & Thursday 12-11, Friday 12-23:30, Saturday 12- midnight, Sunday 12-9.
