Hailey Bieber: 'The pandemic allowed me to dive into skincare research'

Hailey Bieber took a "deep dive" into the world of skincare during the pandemic, which resulted in her new beauty line, Rhode.

The model, who boasts a flawless complexion, is no snob when it comes to skincare and despite enjoying facials with world-renowned aesthetician Joanna Czech, she's also happy to use low-cost products too.

Her first drop of Rhode skincare - Peptide Glazing Fluid, Barrier Restore Cream and Peptide Lip Treatment - arrived on 15 June, and she explained in a chat with Refinery29 what research went into it.

"During the pandemic was the time that I was like, okay, this is the time to take a deep dive," she recalled. "I already knew what I liked. I was always interested in reading about skincare ingredients, why they do what they do, efficacy.

"I was trying everything, the most expensive stuff, the cheapest stuff, everything in between. I was really able to pin down what my favourite things were. That's how I realised how much I love niacinamide. That ingredient was changing my skin, brightening, smoothing - I could see it for myself. What I realised is that most of the stuff that I was using, pretty much all the stuff that I was using, was not expensive."

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 and helps build proteins in the skin and offers protection against environmental damage.

On creating a capsule skincare collection, the 25-year-old revealed that she approaches her beauty routine in the same way as her fashion choices.

"That's how I curate my closet: I want the perfect pair of jeans, the best T-shirt, the best leather jacket, the best blazer," Hailey shared. "Skincare is about staples as well: One great hydration serum, one great moisturiser, one great lip product. You don't have to oversaturate your routine or the market."
