Fringes are back in a big way for autumn with Priyanka Chopra and Louise Redknapp both opting for bangs in the past week.

The Red beauty team say this is all part of a move towards glossy, easy and undone hair. You know, the kind of styles that are perennially cool: shaggy midi bobs, Frenchgirl chic fringes and loose LA waves.

'There are words we use again and again when writing about hair at Red: loose and lived-in, easy and undone,' Red's Senior Beauty Editor Alexandra Friend says. 'All shorthand for the kind of hair that makes our hearts skip a beat; hair that doesn’t try too hard.'

And, actually, the hair we’ve always wanted doesn’t change that much.

'I’ve been cutting variations on the shaggy midi since for ever,' says Headmasters' artistic ambassador Jonathan Soons. 'It’s effortless, easy to style and grows out so well – the perfect blend of boyish and beautiful. What brings it up to date is swapping the insanely heavy layering of the 1990s for invisible layers.

'Fringes, too – they’re the ultimate in sex appeal, especially if you go with the French take, which kicks out at the side for a cool 1970s feel.'

Soons calls this a 'Parisian fringe', meaning it skims the brows but isn't as heavy as a full fringe. Plus, this fringe is pretty much universally flattering. See the main image above and Estée Lauder's Global Beauty Director Violette's Instagram photo below.

'A fringe that’s longer at either side will wing out flatteringly, especially if you take a couple of inches at the centre of your hairline and pinch together at the root as hair dries, to create lift and encourage the shape,' Soons explains.

'For movement that appears to come from nothing more than tucking hair behind ears, take a medium tong with a clamp and, rather than wrapping sections of hair around the barrel, "bend" them around just once.

'Hold in place for a moment (avoid creating a ridge by pulsing the clamp open and shut). Then, move the tong down and bend hair in the other direction. Repeat depending on length. Begin your wave no higher than your cheekbones, and leave ends straight.'

Time to book that salon appointment.
