The Hairy Bikers have recounted some of their closest scrapes on their travels around the world, including nearly being shot at in Turkey.

Dave Myers and Si King spoke to Kate Thornton on White Wine Question Time about Myers being arrested for jaywalking in the US and other memorable moments.

Myers explained officers told him to 'spread 'em' on the bonnet of their car after he jaywalked on The Strip in Las Vegas, saying he'd had a few drinks and didn't realise he couldn't cross the street.

"There was search lights and everything," Myers said. "[They said]: 'Spread this, spread that.' And I just turned to the policeman, I stood up and said: 'Do you know, you've got a bloody awkward country.' That was it."

They also recalled driving offences in Austria and a scary moment when they had inadvertently travelled with cameras on their bikes in the east of Turkey, near the border with Iraq.

"The rule of thumb," Myers said, "was if ever you go into a military crossing point, for God's sake take the cameras off the bikes.

"We forgot and I was just holding back because I had about four cameras on my bike so I let Kingy go up there, do the chatting while I was his mate keeping his gob shut."

King explained: "There's a certain anatomical reaction that you have when you see an armoured vehicle's gun turret come towards you."

He went on to add that they felt 'very lucky' to have the privilege of working on the shows, which see them travel to different parts of the world, sampling local food and culture.

"Even while we were doing it, we understood the privilege of it. It was 16 hour days and it was living out of a suitcase for a protracted periods of time but would either of us swap it? Absolutely not. It's been amazing existence and continues to be," King said.

He said his favourite trip was to India on the BBC's The Hairy Bikers Ride Again, where he remembered eating vegetarian food for six weeks but didn't miss meat at all.

King explained: "That was pretty amazing. The route that we did was just so fantastic.

"Dave had been to India before, but I never had and it just blew my mind. I loved that.
