Millions of adults across Britain are proving that they’re green fingered as gardening experiences a huge boom in popularity.

According to a study of 2,000 brits, more than 38 percent of us are spending more time than ever tending to our plants, while a quarter grow vegetables more than ever before.

But this is gardening with a modern touch – and it’s also sweeping Instagram with 24.3 million posts including #garden in the last month.

Despite the enthusiasm though, nearly two thirds of us admitted that we often struggle to differentiate between plants and weeds – with almost nine in 10 believing that a bluebell is a plant.

Poppies and Forget-me-not’s are also mistaken for flowers, despite being weeds that can creep across entire gardens.

Now, B&Q have launched a new garden app, that cleverly uses image recognition to identify plants and provide all-important tips on how to loo after them.

A B&Q spokesperson said: ‘Gardening in Britain is back in vogue and we’re delighted to see people flexing their green fingered skills. But it’s clear that some outdoor education is still needed.

‘Our new app is just one of many brilliant solutions to help customers make the most of their gardens no matter the size, so whether you’re tending a window box or a country estate, we’ve got the knowledge you’ll need to make your outdoor space perfect.’

And with that, we’re off to tend to the petunias.
