The Little Mermaid star welcomed her first child, Halo, with ex-boyfriend DDG in December 2023.

“Even though we’re a few days into the new year, the greatest thing that 2023 could have done for me, was bring me my son.. welcome to the world my halo. The world is desperate to know you,” Bailey wrote on Instagram.

Despite speculation that Halle was pregnant throughout 2023, the singer and DDG notably kept her pregnancy under wraps until her Instagram reveal. At the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards in March 2024, Halle explained that she kept the news of Halo hidden from the public out of “a place of protection.”

“There was no way in hell I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone,” she said. “Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that.”

In October 2024, DDG announced his split from Bailey after more than two years together.

"The decision was not easy, but we believe it's the best path forward for both of us. We are still best friends and adore each other," the rapper wrote on Instagram. "As we focus on our individual journeys and our roles as co-parents, we cherish the bond we've built and the beautiful moments we've shared."

Here’s everything to know about Halle Bailey’s son, Halo.

Halle announced the birth of her first son, Halo, on Jan. 6, 2024, after quietly welcoming him at the end of 2023, which was one of the busiest years of Halle’s career so far.

Between projects like The Little Mermaid and The Color Purple, Halle managed to keep her pregnancy a secret and continued to do press.

After announcing his birth, Halle answered fan questions on Snapchat about how she was able to continue working while pregnant. The “Angel” singer said it was vital for her sanity to pour time into making the rounds on the press circuit even though she was keeping her pregnancy quiet.

“I think for me, I just realized I think it was helpful for me to be able to still be working and have something to promote, like the beautiful film I was a part of,” Halle said of starring in The Color Purple.

She continued, “Things like that, it just helps my brain and to feel sane. Because there's a lot of emotional vulnerability that you experience going through all of that.”

Halle kept her pregnancy private

Though there were rumors Halle was pregnant throughout 2023, she stayed mum on the topic. After Halo was born, Halle answered fan questions on Snapchat, opening up about why it was important for her to have a “private” and “healthy” journey.

“Honestly I stayed off of all social media,” she said. “I really tried to just keep myself sane and I know that there were a lot of people who would always comment and be like, 'We know girl, we know.' And I'm like, 'OK, that's great that you know, but I'm just going to chill.' ”

At the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards, Halle talked about how much her starring role in The Little Mermaid had changed her life. However, she said that the experience “cannot compare to the biggest joy of my life. And that was becoming a mom to my perfect little angel Halo."

She added that she didn’t tell the public about baby Halo because of “the state of the world” in 2023.

“With the state of the world and the place it is in with men trying to force their will on our bodies, no one on social media, and for damn sure, no one on the planet, was going to tell me what to do with my body or what to share with the world,” she added.

Still, fans speculated that Halle and DDG were expecting a child together after he posted a picture on X (formerly Twitter) of a sonogram on April 1, 2023. “can’t wait to be your dad,” DDG joked in the post.

He revisited the joke the following April Fools Day, writing on X that he “would make the same april fools joke as last year but that mf might come true again.”

The pregnancy was unplanned

On Hollywood Unlocked’s The Jason Lee Show in February 2024, the “I’m Geekin” rapper said that Halle’s pregnancy was not planned. “We weren't aiming for a baby, but it just kinda happened,” he said.

DDG added that they found out Halle was pregnant right after the premiere of The Little Mermaid, one of the greatest heights of her career thus far.

“Both of us have the same interest in being parents,” he said. “And I feel like she always wanted to be a mom. We always kind of just give off that energy, and I always wanted a kid. So, from there we just made the decision to go through with it.”

In June 2024, Halle shared some insight on where her baby was conceived after resharing a post on X of a woman showing a photo of herself by a pool then one of her baby bump with the caption, "Went out the country nine months ago...Brough back a permanent souvenir 😭." Halle quoted the post, writing, "this is what happened to me 😭."

Halle’s career did not slow down after having Halo, either. At the 2024 People’s Choice Awards in February, she spoke with Laverne Cox about having “mom brain.”

“This is archive... of something, I don't remember,” Halle said about her look for the PCAs. “But that's OK, I can never remember, I have mom brain now, and yeah, I'm so excited to be here.”

She added that motherhood had been “great” so far and that she was eager to get home to see her baby after the awards ceremony.

“It's been going so great! I'm so obsessed — it's such a task to leave the house because I don't even want to go anywhere,” she told Cox. “I'm like rushing back to him.”

Halle dealt with postpartum depression after having Halo

In April 2024, Halle revealed in a video on her Snapchat that she’d been dealing with postpartum depression since having Halo. She said that she had gotten to the point where she felt like she couldn’t “be separated from my baby for more than 30 minutes at a time before I start to kind of freak out.”

“I have severe, severe postpartum [depression],” Halle said. “And I don't know if any new moms can relate, but it's to the point where it's really bad.”

She admitted that prior to having a child of her own, she “didn't realize how serious” postpartum depression was for new mothers.

“Now going through it, it almost feels like you're swimming in this ocean that's like the biggest waves you've ever felt and you're trying not to drown. And you're trying to come up for air,” she explained.

Halle added that social media “triggered” her opening up about some of the postpartum symptoms that she’d been experiencing.

“I guess today I was just triggered — especially [since] social media is just not a good thing to be on when you have postpartum — but I was just really triggered today, especially by seeing some of the things that have been said about me and my family," she said.

Halle ended the video by urging others to be considerate of people's feelings.

“Even though you may look up to certain people and you think that they are celebrities, and they appear it have it all together, you never know what somebody else is going through, especially someone who just had a baby literally,” she said.

After having her baby boy, Halle was overcome with joy and affection for Halo. However, she admitted that she has struggled with body image since becoming a mother.

“I feel like a completely different person,” she said on Snapchat. “When I look in the mirror, I just feel like I'm in a whole new body. Like, I don't know who I am.”

She continued by stating that DDG has been the “most amazing daddy in the world” through her struggles, and she’s stunned by how “perfect” Halo is. However, Halle noted that she was still struggling with how her body had changed.

“Halo is a miracle. He is perfect. He is beautiful. When I look at him, I cry because of how special he is,” she said. “The only thing that's been hard for me is feeling normal in my own body.”

DDG picked out his name

DDG chose baby Halo’s name, Halle told PEOPLE in February 2024. She said that they both fell in love with the name “Halo,” and "just agreed" that it was the right fit.

“It was actually my boyfriend's idea,” Bailey shared at the time. “He's the one who came up with his name.”

“Halo” is also the name of a track from Halle’s mentor Beyoncé’s 2008 album, I Am... Sasha Fierce. Though Halle didn’t say there was any correlation between the song and Halo’s name, she said her son “for sure has a theme song” in the Beyoncé track.
