New Hampshire Observatory Captures Fireball Streaking Through Sky

An observatory in northern New Hampshire captured the moment a bright meteor streaked through the sky in the early hours of Friday, September 22.

Footage posted by Mount Washington Observatory shows the sight just after 3 am Friday morning. “What appears to be a fireball, or an especially bright meteor, streaked across the night sky as it moved from south to north,” the observatory said on Facebook.

Fireball sightings were also reported in nearby towns, and in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Vermont, according to the American Meteor Society.

While no active meteor shower was forecast on Friday, the Orionids shower was expected to begin September 26, with peak viewing in late October. Credit: Mount Washington Observatory via Storyful
